Packing List

For a standard Cub Scout weekend campout, pack the Cub Scout Six Essentials (water bottle, first aid kit, flashlight, trail food, sun protection, whistle), a weather-appropriate sleeping bag and pad, a tent, a mess kit for meals, a folding camp chair, and sturdy closed-toe shoes. 

The Cub Scout Six Essentials

  • Filled water bottle
  • First aid kit (small personal size with bandages and antiseptic)
  • Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
  • Trail food (high-energy snacks like granola bars or trail mix)
  • Sun protection (sunscreen and a hat)
  • Whistle (for emergency signaling) 

Sleeping & Shelter Gear

  • Tent with rainfly, stakes, and a ground tarp/footprint
  • Sleeping bag rated for the expected nighttime temperatures
  • Sleeping pad or air mattress for insulation and comfort
  • Pillow 

Clothing & Uniform

  • Closed-toe shoes or hiking boots (broken in ahead of time)
  • Class A or pack t-shirt (as requested by your den leader)
  • Socks and underwear (pack at least one extra pair per day)
  • Weather layers (warm jacket, sweatshirt, and long pants for chilly nights)
  • Rain gear (raincoat or poncho—avoid flimsy disposables if possible)
  • Pajamas
  • Hat or cap 

Mess Kit & Personal Care

  • Optional – Pack usually supplies plates/silverware/cups for mealsMess kit (reusable plate, bowl, cup, fork, and spoon in a mesh dunk bag)
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and comb)
  • Personal medication (if applicable, usually checked in with the pack leader/parent)
  • Insect repellent (non-aerosol)
  • Bath towel and washcloth (if showers are available) 

Camp Extras

  • Folding camp chair
  • Utility wagon (helpful for hauling gear from the parking area to the campsite)
  • Cub Scout Handbook
  • Plastic bags (for storing wet or muddy clothes)
